The Synergy! © logo (or S! for short) was created by Ian Pretty. It is a ring of energy/matter with two pulses 'surfing' around. Captured in the glimpse above it is congruent with its cousin, infinity. The logo was realised in the medieval (computer graphic) year of 1992. Ian modeled S! using cylindrical coordinates - basically it is a circle cutting space whilst pivoting around an axis - at the same time it is moving up and down the axis at double its sine value. Constants were built in so that we could refine the proportions as to refine its proportions pleasingly. Ian & a mate, Andy (Bart) Simpson, had access to an innovative scientific program called Mathematica. Together with a mac IIfx we chugged out variations which we had to apply our imaginations for the colour - for we could screen preview them in grayscale only on our unit. Finally we let it churn pretty good. We exported it into line-art - a pretty massive 1.2 MB set of trillions of scalable triangles. We use this along with rasterised versions. Now of course it's almost a cakewalk with scores of 3D modelers and renderers. Back then it was quite a buzz to realize our imaginations in such an elegant way. Remember though, that it could have been hand-rendered also, and a good artist could do it better and quicker! Please respect our work and copyright. Synergy! and its logo are not public domain.
